How does therapy treat depression?

You may be wondering how working with me will help you work through your depression and manage the symptoms.  I will approach therapy with you through a cognitive behavioral/processing approach and an interpersonal approach.  Therapy aims to stop negative cycles by breaking down things that make you feel bad, anxious, or scared. By making your problems more manageable, you can change your negative thought patterns and improve the way you feel.

  • Cognitive Behavior Therapy (CBT) helps individuals recognize and reframe maladaptive and dysfunctional thoughts and behaviors. Research supports the effectiveness of CBT for all ages. CBT can also be used to prevent relapse. CBT proposes that individuals with depression have a dysfunctional view of their experiences, themselves, and future, known as the cognitive triad. A clinically depressed person may likely see themselves as incapable and helpless, see others as judgmental and critical, and have a bleak and unrewarding view of the future.

  • Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) is an efficacious treatment that is time-limited and treats Major Depressive Disorder. This treatment aims to reduce or eliminate depressive symptoms by improving the quality and functioning of the patient’s interpersonal relationships.
